Though still less connected than I'd like, it's now possible for me to get in touch with y'all via my cellphone. If anybody wants to call, makes the most sense to buy a phone card specifically for the purpose, which will be ridiculously cheap.

I'm no longer sure what the area code is, but I'm in Gaborone, Botswana. Could someone kindly find out what the procedure for calling here is (country code, area code, etc.) and post the details here? I'd like to know how this hwole thing works. Thanks, eh.

If your number is as you posted you will have to dial 011 267 31 7286 4435 from the US.

I just tried phoning 011 267 31 7286 4435 (31 is the area code, I found out via Google), but I'm still getting the message that it's an invalid number. I think I'm closer though because when I did it before, the calling card said I had 13 minutes for $10 (much higher than I was expecting) and this time it said I had 30 minutes. I must be missing a digit or something.
So we need to call 011 267 (city code) 7286 4435. There are a bunch of different city codes for Gaborone, Paul: 390, 391, 392, 3947, 395 and 397. From what I gather from my searching, the '9' was inserted in 2001 (i.e. it used to be 31, not 391). Dialling 391 has gotten me closer -- the error message that it's an invalid number is in what sounds like English and Setswana, rather than just English -- but it still doesn't go through. See if you can find out which city code we're supposed to be using, Paul. I don't really want to try calling all of them to see if something goes through! It will make me shake my tiny fists in fury!
